Following the success of our AI Regulation Summit AI & AI in FS Summit this autumn, City and Financial Global is pleased to give you advanced notice of the next event in the series, The EU AI Act Summit, which will take place in Central London on 6 February.

The EU AI Act is the first comprehensive model for the regulation of AI to be introduced internationally (other than China’s AI regulation, which has a different objective). It takes a prescriptive, rules-based approach and covers both the providers and users of AI technologies. It is extra-territorial in its reach, although how this might be enforced is not yet clear. In recognition of how quickly AI technology is developing, those drafting the legislation have tried to build in a degree of flexibility, but this is likely to be limited by the fact that it is rules-based.

They will also become mandatory as national authorities adopt them for reporting in their markets.

City & Financial Global is proud to present its highly topical Economic Sanctions Summit, which is taking place on 29th January.

Since last year’s Summit, which was very popular, the issue has become even more timely and topical. The current conflict in Israel and Gaza has exacerbated an already volatile geopolitical landscape. The sanctions imposed against Russian banks, companies, oligarchs and other entities whose association with Putin is potentially helping to fund the conflict in Ukraine were amongst the most draconian ever imposed. But have they worked? And what lessons have been learned for other potential conflicts in China and the Middle East?

In particular, there is a widespread consensus on the need for a global, scalable, voluntary carbon market that will enable companies and investors to build on their net zero strategies by financing activities elsewhere that address their remaining emissions while on the journey to zero.

As you are aware, data lies at the heart of the revolution in climate reporting and ESG investing, and is, in many ways, its Achilles’ heel. Investee companies can still use a variety of different approaches to how they report ESG data, and what data they report, although the new ISSB standards will improve this situation when they come into effect. Asset managers are subject to a variety of different ESG regulatory reporting regimes and taxonomies across the world, despite recent efforts at harmonisation. Sourcing accurate and consistent highly quality ESG data is a major problem, as the market for its supply is very fragmented and wide ranging in terms of quality.

It will also look at the use of London as a “laundromat” for criminals to launder money through the acquisition of property and how the National Crime Agency can combat this in the future.

Putin’s devastating unprovoked war in the Ukraine has prompted many investors and corporations to pull out of Russia. Renewable energy stocks are being shorted whilst defence stocks shoot upwards. Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, the question of whether the financial world is heading toward greater regulatory convergence or divergence is as relevant now as it has ever been. Will the UK use is hard-won emancipation from the perceived constraints of European regulation to develop a rule book that is markedly different and better suited to its needs? While we have seen some areas where the UK has begun to diverge, there has not yet been a wholesale revision of the regime.

The size of the cryptoasset market has grown exponentially in the last year, from just under $800 billion to $2.3 trillion today, and up from just $16 billion 5 years ago. It is almost exactly five years since the EU Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) came into force. In that time there has been a multitude of developments in the interpretation of what constitutes market abuse, the maintenance of insider lists, delaying disclosure of information, market soundings and market manipulation. Although the UK is no longer technically bound by MAR, in practice it has been adopted into UK domestic law and liability for market abuse in Europe and elsewhere is still a major issue for global organisations.

At this difficult time, the impact of the coronavirus outbreak is the overwhelming focus of everyone’s attention, including those working in the financial markets. Although, as the Bank of England and the FCA pointed out recently, this crisis is temporary and will come to end, it will nonetheless have a longstanding impact on the financial services industry, not least in the debate on ESG and stakeholder relations. City & Financial Global – in partnership with the City of London Corporation and TheCityUK – is organising this series of virtual roundtables to help financial institutions to understand the implications of both the coronavirus and the end of the transition period for their businesses.

Over the past year, the payments industry has been evolving and expanding, with digital payment services and transaction volumes growing across the globe. The competitive landscape is being redefined by the entry of non-traditional providers, the evolution of new solutions provided by financial institutions and the development of strategic alliances that cross traditional sectoral boundaries. Over and beyond this transformation, there will also be major convergence around: products and solutions linked to payments; technology platforms and clearing capabilities that will be increasingly global in nature and reach; and of the operation of global securities and currency markets. In addition, we are likely to see integration of regulatory regimes that today are still often fragmented.

To discuss these issues and more, City & Financial is running its professional virtual roundtable series on Payment Systems Regulations and Innovation, next 3-5 June. This series comprises five webinars, which will cover all aspects of payments innovations, including the regulatory framework, in the context of the new challenges brought on by the current global crisis.
